How We Handle Conversations About Self-Harm and Suicide
Last updated: October 1, 2026
AO1 companions are here to help people understand what they're feeling and think through what's next. They're not built to handle a crisis, and we don't want them pretending otherwise. This page explains what happens if a conversation touches on suicide or self-harm, so you know what to expect.
While You’re Talking
Conversations are screened for language that signals someone may be in danger, as it happens. If that language comes up, the companion stops the normal conversation and shifts into a safety response. It's generated by the model in real time, not a fixed script, and it stays focused on safety: encouraging you to reach out to emergency services, a crisis line, or someone you trust.
What AO1 Is and Isn’t
AO1 is not a crisis service. We can't see a call in progress and step in, and we can't contact emergency services on your behalf. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911. If you're struggling and need to talk to someone right now, you can reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.
